Congratulations!  You are reading the first post.

Firsts are always kind of awkward–first day of school, first exam, first kiss… I am looking forward to breaking the first post cherry!

So let’s open with a few definitions, since that’ll  help make things less awkward, though potentially more boring.

Publicity: information with news value issued as a means of gaining public attention or support

Public Relations: the business of inducing the public to have understanding for and goodwill toward a person, firm, or institution; also : the degree of understanding and goodwill achieved.

Thanks, Miriam Webster!

PR, public relations, publicity. The terms are interchangeable. Publicity is about media outreach. PR communicates to the general public as well, so it mixes media outreach with marketing and advertising. PR for Smarties is where publicity and public relations collide. If you have a good message, you need different channels to communicate it. You can’t rely solely on traditional media anymore.

Since traditional media is my background, PR for Smarties uses traditional media as a base but we will jump off and talk about all this other stuff, too. It all works (buzz word alert!) synergistically.

Since this site is brand new, I am sure there will be a ton of evolution in look and offerings. I value feedback from you about it. So sound off on what you would like to see and learn!

It’s time to get creative! It is going to be a fun ride.
